Fur-babies in your Wedding Ceremony

Writer's picture: Marie Hayes Marie Hayes

Are you wondering if you should include your fur-babies in your wedding ceremony? The simple answer to this one is... absolutely!!!!

One lovely young couple I recently married, met through his lost dog. True story, she found his dog, who had escaped from home and being a good pet owner, the Groom had previously included his contact details on the dog's collar. So, she rang the number on the collar and the rest, as they say, is history.

So if your fur-baby means a lot to you, or your relationship as a couple they can play a huge role. If managed well it can be a beautiful aspect of your wedding day.

My top tips for including your fur-baby are:

  • Check first with where you are having your ceremony if it is ok

Some private venues may not love the idea, and no dogs are allowed into a national park without a lead. We can look into this to make sure you're following the rules.

  • Consider how they behave with new people around (and lots of people or noise), they may not cope very well.

If you've passed the above then please consider having a family member or friend as your fur-baby’s handler for the day. Just so it frees you both up from the worry. Make sure whoever is looking after your pet has a few treats with them, just in case.

It's also a good idea to have someone take them back home again after the ceremony and photos have all been done, maybe there is a neighbour or family friend who is happy to come to the ceremony and drop your fur-baby back home afterwards.

If you're thinking of having your fur-baby as the ring bearer, it's risky but can also work as

an absolute treat. Try a small bag and tie it very well to the collar, remembering of

course, you do need to be able to open it easily to remove the rings. Makes your day so special.

One lovely couple I recently married has their very own old faithful companion walk down the aisle by himself. The ceremony was at their family home and was such a special highlight for them as they are absolutely devoted to their fur-baby. He is the one featured on the image, and he really stole the show with those big beautiful eyes.
